First off, I love the 500. There is no color wheel since when you white balance with either the A or B white balance switches it automatically selects 3200 or 5600. There is a preset switch and for that you set 3200 or 5600 in the SW menu. The wheel just gives you ND choices that work with either 3200 or 5600.

Have you confirmed the drive has the correct formatting. I believe it has to be a PC format, but I don’t remember which one. I’m sure I’ve seen that spec in the manual.

I suggest you always playback the first few clips you shoot (in camera) and continue to do so periodically during your shoot. Even in the “old days” of Beta this was a safe procedure. That way you know that your original recording is OK. We transfer all our P2 cards in the field and use Raylight or HD Log to play parts of each clip to confirm. This is probably also a good way to go as you capture clips to QT from P2.

As I understand the process, exporting omfs from FCP just includes the audio in your timeline or section of the timeline defined by ins and outs. There are a couple of ways to give the editor more options. 1) Greatly increase the handles on export. This will give more room on the beginning and ending of each clip. 2) Drop all the original files at the end your timeline and they will be included in the omf. I’m not sure whether they will have the correct timecode (if they have timecode). 3) Just send the editor aiffs of all the original files.
I’m not sure why he wants these files. What you export (assuming you haven’t eq-ed, compressed or otherwise messed with the audio) is the same as the original files, just edited pieces of them. That’s why adding long handles might give the editor more leeway if he wants to slip tracks or fade them differently.

Check out the Edirol UA-25 interface. It’s under $250. There are a bunch of these kind of interfaces on the market. This one is USB powered, but there are also Firewire ones as well.

We record podcasts from phone calls all the time. There is no way it will equal a studio recording. However, if you record through a mixer with some eq, you can make it sound better. Then, in post, denoise the track with any number of noise reduction programs. This will eliminate the line crackle and hum. Compress the signal and eq again and you will get marginally acceptable results. If the program is viewed on the web or with playback units that don’t have very good playback capability you may get away with it. Waves has a plug in called BassMaxx (I think) that pyschoacoustically replaces bass making it seem more apparent. We use that, too.
Can you get your talent to a recording studio where they are located? You can monitor their performance over the phone and the studio can email the unedited file to you. That might only cost a hundred or two depending where the studio is located.

Roland’s suggestions are excellent. You will also need a Sync IO or equivalent to be locked to video, etc. It also allows you to pull up and down and adjust other timing parameters depending on what you’re locking to. You’ll need to distribute word clock to your external audio devices. Sync IO generates it or you can use another generator.

The MXO works great. It’s a virtual match to my Panny LH1700 field monitor. And it works as a scan converter. The day after I received mine a client needed a bunch of web videos transferred to video. That alone paid for the MXO.

If you go the NP-1 route there are belt packs that can carry the battery and keep the weight off the camera.
