MPEG Streamclip can directly export a file in a QT format from most DVDs without a capture card. https://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html If for whatever reason you need to capture from the DVD player output, then checkout capture devices from AJA, Blackmagic and Matrox.

Just saw a post in FCP Basics by Zane Barker about using a difference matte effect to achieve a key. There are two important considerations: the camera must be fixed (same as with green screen) and you need a plate where the interviewee is not in frame. Here’s a tut: https://www.fcptips.com/final-cut-pro/difference-mattes-video_714208160.html

If I understand you properly, you want to have P2 clips in a separate place from clips captured from tape. What I’d do is create 2 bins in the project browser – one for P2 and one for tape. Then, select which one you want and “Set Logging Bin” to it and capture or transfer. Do the same for the other bin.

I’m not clear if you want to have images over the white BG, or use that BG to key and completely replace the white with something else. If the former and the images have to pass behinf talent, you’ll be doing a lot of rotoscoping. If the later, you’d have much more control using a green screen. Even if you want a white BG, it makes sense to stay with green screen. If you shoot on white and have to adjust color on talent, the white will also change. If you’re on green, you can mess with a look for talent and keep the BG stable.

Definitely try trashing prefs. Could be a bad media or render file. You can try trashing renders with the render manager and re-render. Are any devices sharing your Firewire buss? That’s a no-no.

Try the “old standards” – trash prefs and repair permissions.

Make sure you never use your system drive as your scratch drive. Another possible reason for the error might be corrupt drive directories. Run Disk Warrior on your system and external disks. IMHO, Disk Warrior is the most important utility to have if you use a Mac.
