asked before but got no answer..

I have macbook pro duo core 1.83 2g ram..Final cut 6.0.6 app on Mac and files and video on external drive (FW).. FC did not like the AVI file from a GoPro camera so I converted to apple file for editing.. when I go to export to quick time it will begin processing and then the macbook instantly shuts down. yes the MB is hot but it only seems to happen when QT is involved, I did a conversion w/Compressor and that worked OK. I did trash the QT and download a new version, made no diff.
and I did a disc repair which said nothing needed repair.
could it be as simple as a preference file I could trash?

Definitely try trashing prefs. Could be a bad media or render file. You can try trashing renders with the render manager and re-render. Are any devices sharing your Firewire buss? That’s a no-no.

I only have one FW port so all three External drives come through that FW cable but no other devices are in the chain. I did trash the Quick time Plist but that did nothing.. if I do trash a media file won’t I loose the video? I guess I could reimport it from one of my conversions but I don’t have the original file anymore.. Please excuse my ignorance, I’m fairly new to FC but need to catch up for my job..
if your interested here’s my youtube video that I was able to upload after converting via Compressor.

    thanks for the help! Brad

If you didn’t repair permissions on your drives, try that. Don’t trash your media files. What I was suggesting was to trash your renders with Render Manager (in the Tools menu). Also, I’d disconnect all the external drives except for your scratch drive. I’ve had problems with 2 FW drives connected at the same time. It depends on the drive. Sometimes using two is fine, but other times, not.

If none of that helps, try exporting segments of the program to find the problem segment. Export 30 seconds or a minute at-a-time. When you come to a segment that hangs, then you know where the bad media is. You can then divide that section into smaller pieces to find the bad file.
