Check the connection with another cable. If you still have the static, it’s in the cam. It’s possible the connection is dirty. You can try using compressed air in a can to blow out the connector. If there’s still static then you need to get it serviced. If the static goes away when you switch cables, then the first cable is bad.

You can certainly color correct the tape. The challenge is how to handle dissolves. I’d blade the clip before the dissolve to the next cut or after the next dissolve. Then color correct that clip and add dissolves as necessary so the transition to color corrected footage is smooth. If the cameras are consistently off, you’ll be able to color correct one time and apply that to the rest of the clips to save time.

How a particular device handles video over 100% varies depends on how it’s set up. Most cameras can record over 100% and still not clip. AFAIK, zebras are simply indicators. They’re not a threshold over which clipping will occur. At least that’s the way all the cameras I’ve worked with operate.

It’s possible you were getting flares in the lens from the spot. BTW what cameras were used. As I said, you should be able to fix most of what you’re seeing using color correction in post. If you have FCP, Color would be very helpful. I’m not sure why one camera wouldn’t white balance. That might be caused by colored light “confusing” the camera. On our camera, if the light is out of the expected range, we get an error message.

Starting from scratch, I’d capture HDV as ProRes. However, as you’re already into it in HDV, I’d capture the new material as HDV when you upconvert with the Blackmagic card. IMHO it’s best to capture or transfer to just one codec and then edit with that.

You shouldn’t convert to mpeg 2 and then convert to an FCP edit codec. Do it in one step in MPEG Streamclip. Open the VOB and export ProRes, DV, DVCPro50, whatever. How is your external drive formatted? If it’s FAT32 you have a 4GB file size limit. If the converted file is bigger than 4GB the export will fail.

To me, it’s a camera issue. Obviously, the cameras were not matched before the shoot. Even with the differences between the two cameras, this could easily be fixed in post.

I’d build a simple Flash interface with a video window and slide window. Keep the video small and the slides large. It will be much more efficient bandwidth-wise since embedding slides in a video stream wastes bandwidth. The slides will look better and the IT dept will be happier.

Recently, with some DVDs (corporate, professionally replicated) MPEG Streamclip was unable to export. The DVD file structure is visible, but when I try to export a VOB it fails. I ended up playing out of a DVD player and capturing that. I thought it might be some form of copy protection, but nothing was noted on the label or case about that. I’d love to find out what’s going on with this. It’s happened a couple of times.
