    Accepted wisdom seems to be only use HQ for aspect ratios greater than 1920×1080 (ie. 2k & up). That said, if there is high-rez media being used in your sequence then it makes sense that all media be the same codec. There are two advantages of ProRes over 8-bit uncompressed. ProRes is a 10-bit codec and it produces a smaller file. There is a whitepaper (I think) about ProRes. Try searching the Apple site (and the Cow) for ProRes.

    ProRes or DVCPro 50 would be my suggestions. Make sure to choose an appropriate frame rate if the source was shot at 30P. Be sure to turn on Frame Controls in Compressor’s Inspector. I select the Best quality option depending upon what I’m changing. So if resizing, then I’d use Best for that. You can try with the default settings on a short clip first and see how it looks. Many folks suggest that’s good enough – that you don’t have to use Best settings.

    Why not downconvert the HD Sequence to SD using the Kona? I believe that model downconverts in real time.

    Did you use a slate at the start of your roll? If not is there a recognizable action you can use to line up shots. Another way is to listen to the audio off two tracks and slip them until they align. Then do the same with one of those tracks and the third. This is what PluralEyes tries to do. If the audio is so low you can’t hear it, you’ll have to do it with a visual reference.

    Unfortunately, when the audio varies as you describe manual adjustment is the best way. Someone should ride audio levels during the show. That said, Singular Software has 2 programs that may help: Levelator and PluralEyes. Check them out here.

    The Mac Pro would be my choice. It has much greater processing power than the iMac. While you might get by with a Firewire 800 drive, the RAID will definitely do the job. The FCP Browser will show the clip’s format. How are you planning to monitor? Do you have an i/o card or box?

    Try the Unsharp mask in video filters. Also (IMHO), the Nattress Big Box of Tricks has a better Unsharp Mask filter. Read how to use it and apply gently. Less is more.
