The client gave me h.264 .mov files from a Canon camera. What is the quickest, easiest way to downconvert or re-compress those files so I can edit them in Final Cut, even if it is not The Most Beautiful possible down-conversion? (My system can’t handle HD files)
    Thanks,
    Dave

ProRes or DVCPro 50 would be my suggestions. Make sure to choose an appropriate frame rate if the source was shot at 30P. Be sure to turn on Frame Controls in Compressor’s Inspector. I select the Best quality option depending upon what I’m changing. So if resizing, then I’d use Best for that. You can try with the default settings on a short clip first and see how it looks. Many folks suggest that’s good enough – that you don’t have to use Best settings.

    John,
Very helpful – I was not even thinking that the solution would be as simple as playing with sequence settings.

It is a 16×9 clip and I want to leave it that way.

The clip originally would not play well with the sequence settings at Frame Size: HDTV 1080i (16:9) and Compressor: H.264.

It does seem to be working at Frame Size: NTSC DV (3:2) with the compressor set either to DVCPRO50 – NTSC or H.264.

Lots of rendering but looks like this will work.

Where do I find frame controls in Compressor? Do you mean the program Compressor or the compressor setting in sequence settings?

    Thanks much,
    Dave
