To build on Ricard’s excellent suggestions, you should also listen to playback as there are times where your input audio will sound ok, but it’s in fact being recorded with distortion. Playback is the final test. Some recorders will allow you to monitor sound both at the input and “after” recording – also referred to as return from the recorder. Then, you simply periodically listen to return to assure yourself your recording is solid.

I’ve videotaped many dance recitals and there’s a factor that may affect how you edit the program. I first noticed it at a recital where I was getting a board feed (BTW have pads on hand in case the feed’s too hot) and had mics open at the back of the house by my cameras. When I listened to the mix of both channels during a rehearsal, I heard a distinct delay. Sound travel 1 foot in a millisecond, so after about 8 feet you start to hear the delay. Depending on which audio you use – the board or mics – you may need to slip the audio and video in relation to each other so the action on-camera matches the audio track. This offset will remain constant throughout the performance.

If you are seeing this on the DVD thru a TV set it’s possible you have the field order reversed. In your DVD-making program try changing from upper or lower field to the opposite. If it’s set to upper change it to lower. Then make a DVD and see if it’s better.

Ref (reference) video comes from a sync generator. Its purpose is to send a timing signal to various devices. It’s possible your switcher generates its own sync. If so (and if the signal is available) feed it to the Multibridge Pro ref in. See if it helps.

Do you have the folder of small QT movies that Raylight made? They’re the link between the MCF and FCP. If so, the following might work. I agree you probably need Raylight, but you can try this. Make sure the drive with the MXFs is attached, then in FCP highlight the clips and choose batch capture. See if that works.

H.264 is not an edit codec. It’s a delivery codec. That’s probably a major source of your problem. You should have chosen an edit codec like ProRes when you exported from MPEG Streamclip.
