H.264 is not an edit codec. Did the footage come from a DSLR or Flip-type camera? You are correct that you need to convert the H.264. Use Compressor to convert to an edit codec like ProRes. That will greatly speed up your edit. H.264 is a long-GOP codec and the computer is struggling as it tries to decode it in real time. You’ll note you have no options in the RT menu. You only get RT with edit codecs. Any codec in Easy Setups is an edit codec. This will take a lot of time on your iMac. You could try MPEG Streamclip (which is a free download). It might be faster. Try a short clip with both Compressor and MPEG Streamclip and see how they compare – speed and quality-wise.

I’m familiar with turning on Frame Controls in Compressor. Probably the only control that needs to be BEST is Rate Conversion. Leave Resize and Deinterlace at the default settings. It takes a while because HDV is a long-GOP codec and even with your Mac Pro it’s going to take some time. It’s smart to do a short test encode. If you were able to back off Resize and Deinterlace try another test and, hopefully, the speed improves.

It sounds like your drive is too slow. Also, FAT32 is ng for many reasons. You don’t say what edit codec you’re using. Try to export a short segment across a couple of edits to an H.264 that’s not to big. Keep the data rate around 1.5 mmbps. See how that plays. If the edits don’t jump, you’re probably having drive speed issues. Try playing with your RT settings to see if you can get acceptable playback.

It know FCP5 handles DVCProHD. If you went with an SD codec I’d suggest DVCPro50 over DV. It’s much better quality.

What’s the frame rate of the original file and what frame rate are you converting it to? Make sure you have Frame Controls ON in the Frame Controls tab of Compressor’s Inspector) and choose Best for quality settings that apply.

I like the Primatte keyer in Motion over Final Cut’s keyer. That said, I do most of my keying in AfterFX with Keylight which is an exceptionally good keyer. There’s now a Keylight for FCP keyer that works inside FCP. It costs $250. Also, Noise Industries has a new FXFactory-based keyer called PHYX Keyer. It costs $199 and looks like a very nice keyer. If you go with one of these please post back and let us know what you think.

Digital Heaven has a program for FCP called Loader. You drag audio, video or graphics to a window that opens for each running project and Loader puts the assets in the correct folder in your project. And for audio, if it’s mp3s, aac, caf, 44.1kHz, whatever, it automatically converts to aiff 48kHz. Very neat if you do a lot of that. BTW I have no association with DH. I just like a lot of their products.

Are there any new filters applied in the encoder? Are you using a pre set? Chec to see if anything’s different in the new encoder setup or presets? It also might be a gamma issue.
