jumpy footage
I am trying to troubleshoot and edit at the same time and it’s driving me crazy! I know I am missing things because I am trying focus on the job because of deadlines. Please help!
I am editing in FCP studio 2 on a iMac G5 with 4GB of ram. My source material is 1920×1080 23.98fps as are my sequences. My storage is a SimpleTech (yikes) 1TB drive (not partitioned, formatted FAT) connected FW 800.
My issues are 1) everytime the playback arrives at an edit it jumps or locks up for a second then resumes until it gets to another edit. Also 2) When I go into view desktop cinema preview it stutters really bad. Footage is stuttering all over the place.
Is this a bandwidth issue? Is there a solution? I have restarted everything, I have run repair on disk permissions and have repaired disk on the external HD.

It sounds like your drive is too slow. Also, FAT32 is ng for many reasons. You don’t say what edit codec you’re using. Try to export a short segment across a couple of edits to an H.264 that’s not to big. Keep the data rate around 1.5 mmbps. See how that plays. If the edits don’t jump, you’re probably having drive speed issues. Try playing with your RT settings to see if you can get acceptable playback.

Yes, it is H.264 compression. I am assuming that is my problem. Compressor is giving me all kinds of problem converting the clips. Says ‘unknown time’ in the progress bar and stays that way. Tried a program called CineForm but it bites. I copied all the files to a brand new G Drive and still the same issue. Looks like I may have to convert all the files through FCP, which would take a few days, unless there is another option I am hoping someone will enlighten me. Please? Help?

H.264 is not an edit codec. Did the footage come from a DSLR or Flip-type camera? You are correct that you need to convert the H.264. Use Compressor to convert to an edit codec like ProRes. That will greatly speed up your edit. H.264 is a long-GOP codec and the computer is struggling as it tries to decode it in real time. You’ll note you have no options in the RT menu. You only get RT with edit codecs. Any codec in Easy Setups is an edit codec. This will take a lot of time on your iMac. You could try MPEG Streamclip (which is a free download). It might be faster. Try a short clip with both Compressor and MPEG Streamclip and see how they compare – speed and quality-wise.
