Video looks like it has trails
Howdy, a true Noob here.
I have an issue where when I play back my video, it looks like- when in playing fast movement- it looks like it has trails. Hope that makes sence to somebody.

I usually shoot a couple dance concerts a year and have been asked to put together DVDs for the studio to show in the lobby. I use a Canon GL1 and XL2. I do not adjust most things on the camera, not too pleased with picture but I will learn more as I go. Low light, crispness ect.When I import footage to FCP, I am not sure what, if any, settings I need to change as it imports. I DO notice when I play back the video when a dancer jumps or runs across the stage, the legs they look like their is more than two. Like tracers or trails. The faces often look a little distorted, not much detail. But the movement if really bad.
If my settings wrong in my capture? When I print to DVD it almost looks worse!

How are you monitoring your video? If you are not using an external broadcast monitor and you shot interlaced (not progressive) footage, it’s likely that you are seeing interlacing on your computer display, which won’t be displayed properly the way it would be on a broadcast monitor.

No external monitoring. Just thru the viewfinder/LCD. All I have. When I used Adobe Premier, I did not notice the problem, but I have not looked that close.

I did not think the GL1 Shot in 24p mode. Truely not sure what it does shoot in.
I know the XL2 can. Tried to set them up the same.
I usually use the XL1 at a full stage shot and use the GL1 for pans and closeups.
Heck, I just tried the last two shows in 16:9!

It’s more than likely a jusy an interlaced issue. Can u hook a TV up to your camera? Run Firewire out of FCP to ur cam. Then cam out to TV. This way you can see your timeline on a TV screen as it plays. Don’t judge ur video on the comp screen.
OR
Make a dvd and play it on a tv.
You should use easy setup DV NTSC 48k and u’ll be fine.
DV NTSC 48k Anamorphic if u shoot Wide.I had a GL2 that looked soft on wideshots when in 16X9 wide mode.

Wow you folks are great to respone.
I have made a DVD and you clearly see a “trail” in movement. I have both cameras set up for a test shoot tonight to try to work this out.
***I am kinda freaking out because I got a call last night to shoot another dance company and IF I do good on this, I could have more gigs in the future.

Sorry, thats what I ment. I playback all DVDs on a TV set to see the outcome.

If you are seeing this on the DVD thru a TV set it’s possible you have the field order reversed. In your DVD-making program try changing from upper or lower field to the opposite. If it’s set to upper change it to lower. Then make a DVD and see if it’s better.
