I’d suggest one addition to David’s excellent workflow. In the Dolby Digital (ac3) preset make the following changes:

1) In Compressor’s Inspector look in the Audio tab for Dialog Normalization and change it from -27 to -31.

2) In the Inspector’s Preprocessing tab change the Compression Preset from Film Standard Compression to None.

Perhaps when you installed your Kona, you didn’t check off the additional codecs available. You could try uninstalling and re-installing the drivers. Look for the step where you can select additional codecs.

My vote, too, is for HD. For 3 years we’ve been shooting HD, although, our corporate clients have no way to show it. We supply SD DVDs. The rationale is that over the next few years as DVD players are replaced by Blu-ray, they’ll want those complete programs in HD, or as assets for inclusion in new programs. As it sounds like your program will be for sale, having the HD version will extend its shelf life.

Shane’s Stock Answer #42 – David Roth Weiss’ Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD

The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:

1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.

2. Open DVDSP, select the “graphical” tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.

3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.

4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option “first play”.

5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.

6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the “general tab” in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select “16:9 pan-scan.”

7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.

I’ve had very good results using Compressor to convert Flip footage to ProRes 422, although, I’ve never tried to convert its frame rate. Just be sure to enable Frame Controls in Compressor in Compressor and choose the Best quality settings.

First off, you can discover a clip’s properties (video [frame] size, frame rate, Compressor [the clip’s codec], etc.) by right-clicking on the clip in the Browser or Timeline and choosing Format. That’s where you’ll find important information about the clip. You are able to change some of these properties. One of them is Anamorphic. If you make a change to a clip in the Browser (click in the space to the right of Anamorphic) the change will remain every time you edit a portion of that clip into a timeline. If you make a change to a clip in the timeline, however, it will only affect that clip.

Besides changing clip’s properties, you can also change a sequence’s anamorphic property. With a seq open choose Sequence menu > Settings and you see them. Look to the right for the Anamorphic 16:9 checkbox. If it’s checked, uncheck it. That will probably fix the image in your Canvas. However, the anamorphic setting in certain clips may conflict with the seq setting and may have to be changed.

Play with it and see how it works. This is one of those reasons for converting all formats you receive for an edit to just one format, so the settings are consistent clip-to-clip.

If you haven’t trashed FCP prefs and repaired rermissions, do so. If you have Disk Warrior, run that after trashing prefs, before repairing Permissions. Whenever FCP acts strangely that’s the first thing I do.

I think this only works in FCP 7. I used the single right-facing arrow selection tool (press T once) to select a bunch of clips and Cmd+Opt+T. You can select them however you like.
