  • Not able to transfer m2ts and mts files in FCP 7

Posted by Patrick Kondelis on March 26, 2010 at 2:18 am

    Hi everyone,

I have read numerous threads about similar issues, with no outcome for my current situation.

I have downloaded the latest Sony plugin.

I have FCP 7.0.1 and I am currently editing a very large project. Half was shot on a EX1 which has been great, but I have a ton of footage on a drive that was shot with AVCHD files. The only files on this drive are m2ts and mts, which my log and transfer will not recognize. I am currently transferring this crazy amount of footage with VoltaicHD, which takes about 6 hours to convert 20 minutes of footage. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I am on a MacBook Pro Dual 2.5 Intel

You need to use Compressor to transcode the footage to make your sequence settings.

    Thanks Michael, I’ll try that.

Compressor will not let me convert this footage. It is not allowing me to bring mts and m2ts files into Compressor?

    Checkout ClipWrap.

Hi Patrick, I’m experiencing similar challenges with MTS files. I tried the ClipWrap, though I’m not finished or getting good results yet. Need to mix 720p mts files into a 1080i sequence on FCP7. Any joy on your end? Peter

    Peter,

I went with Voltaic HD, which as $39. Footage looks good, but it takes forever to transfer. I just can’t believe that FCP 7 wont take m2ts or mts files unless you plug the camera directly to the computer. Not efficient at all.

To log and transfer m2t without plugging the camera back in you need to store the files in a folder labeled video > HVR > all the files that were in the HVR folder on your card including your m2t.
Maybe you don’t need all the files from the HVR folder but I haven’t tried this without them all yet.
When you go to log and transfer select the video folder not the HVR folder.

This is helpful to know as I’ve not edited with mts files, yet. The workflow is very similar to the P2 workflow where the contents of each P2 card are saved inside a folder labeled as you’d label a tape reel, say, “Project Name Card 1.” After the shoot you have a bunch of folders: #1 to whatever. Then using Log & Transfer, you point toward these folders on your drive, and all the content opens up.

Even you can load AVCHD video to FCP, FCP does not have native editing support for AVCHD footage. You can use the Log and Transfer window to transcode AVCHD footage to an Apple ProRes codec or the Apple Intermediate Codec during transfer. But the ProRes or AIC video files become even big, even 10 times than the original one. Final Cut Pro does not have native editing support for AVCHD footage. So it is a nice choice to transcode AVCHD video to other ediatble video format for FCP, like MOV for FCP.

Following is the program I am using:
