  • Mixing XDCAM EX 1080p24 with Flip MinoHD 720/29.97 footage: how to get best quality?

I’m a film student editing a friend’s documentary. Most of the footage was shot on the Sony EX-1 in 1080p at 24 FPS. However, there’s also a fair amount of (underwater) footage shot on a Flip MinoHD at 1280×720, 29.97 FPS (encoded in H.264).

I’d like to upconvert the resolution of the Flip footage and convert it to 24p. I know I can do that in Final Cut Pro’s Motion tab, but I also know Compressor, After Effects, and Motion can all do this.

What’s the best, highest quality conversion using one or more of those tools? Rendering time isn’t much of an issue: I just want to get the best-looking footage I can from the Flip camera, even though I’m enlarging it and changing the framerate.

    Thanks in advance,
    Ben

I’ve had very good results using Compressor to convert Flip footage to ProRes 422, although, I’ve never tried to convert its frame rate. Just be sure to enable Frame Controls in Compressor in Compressor and choose the Best quality settings.

Here’s a belated thanks. Compressor did the job, and the footage looks surprisingly good next to the EX-1 clips! I was worried there would be a hugely noticeable drop-off in quality, but that audience probably won’t even notice (much).
