Aspect Ratios?
Hi There,
I am still figuring FCP out, and well, my clips are HD, and when i import them and look at them in the viewer, they are a nice and big and fill the screen basically. But now, when i move them into the timeline, when they are in my canvas, it’s so much smaller! Please help, it’s bugging me so much, and I don’t know how to fix it. Now my clips are in what I think people call the letterbox? There’s black on top and bottom. So please help, how can i get my clips to the size that they are in the viewer!?

What kind of HD? Does your sequence settings match the clip? Do you see any colored lines over the video track? Also, what version of FCP are you using and what kind of Mac? It’s always helpful if you provide as much information as you can about your system and workflow in your post. It helps folks better help you.

See, im no pro at this, so I have no clue what kind of HD! How do I know if the sequence matches the clip? Some clips are bigger size then others, no idea why! And it gets kind of annoying and looks unproper when the letterboxing is smaller or bigger sometimes! There are no colored lines, I know that, and I am using a MacBook Pro. here is a little Screen Cap I took to show you all. https://i39.tinypic.com/jt4das.png So they are a big size when they are in the viewer, then get letterboxed in the canvas! Please help!

First off, you can discover a clip’s properties (video [frame] size, frame rate, Compressor [the clip’s codec], etc.) by right-clicking on the clip in the Browser or Timeline and choosing Format. That’s where you’ll find important information about the clip. You are able to change some of these properties. One of them is Anamorphic. If you make a change to a clip in the Browser (click in the space to the right of Anamorphic) the change will remain every time you edit a portion of that clip into a timeline. If you make a change to a clip in the timeline, however, it will only affect that clip.
Besides changing clip’s properties, you can also change a sequence’s anamorphic property. With a seq open choose Sequence menu > Settings and you see them. Look to the right for the Anamorphic 16:9 checkbox. If it’s checked, uncheck it. That will probably fix the image in your Canvas. However, the anamorphic setting in certain clips may conflict with the seq setting and may have to be changed.
Play with it and see how it works. This is one of those reasons for converting all formats you receive for an edit to just one format, so the settings are consistent clip-to-clip.
