Which Varicam are you using? Is the Varicam’s System Freq. set to 50Hz? We recently tested a PAL workflow with our HPX500. We used a PAL Easy Setup to L&T the clips into FCP. It worked perfectly. We were even able to view the footage on our HD monitor.

The audio must be PCM 16 or 24 bit, 48kHz. If it’s not, use an app other than FCP (Soundtrack Pro, QT Pro, etc.) to convert the audio to those parameters. Then import the audio into FCP. Lay it against the video and sync the two. Then highlight the synced video and audio tracks and hit Cmd L. That will link them together.

We need more information about your workflow. What codec are you using to edit? What codec was used in the camera? What version of FCP are you using? Did you let FCP choose the sequence settings? When you say”frames” do you mean that literally? Do you see individual frames that are “stretched” surrounded by frames that aren’t.

I’m not familiar with that camera, but if it records with 4:2:2 color space it’ll key fine. Even if it doesn’t you’re probably okay as long as you light properly. If you search the Cow you’ll find many discussions of keying workflows.

Could this be related to your capture card/device? Have you tried running Disk Warrior? If your disk directories are corrupt is it possible FCP is losing track of where the media is? I’ve never had this happen, so I just guessing.

In FCP in the Motion tab check if the distort settings are causing the problem. If so, you can use Remove or Paste Attributes to fix.

I think you could export in DV/DVCPro as choosing a higher-quality codec won’t improve your images. However, if you’ve added graphics in FCP, then using a better codec like ProRes (LT or 422) will maintain the graphics quality. As for what codec to use out of AE, again, I’d choose ProRes. Also, you should switch the Compressor Setting in your Sequence Setting to ProRes so you maintain the AE quality when you bring it back into FCP. If AE’s on a Windows platform I’m not sure if you can work with ProRes. If not, I’d use DVCPro50 or 8-bit uncompressed.
