That’s really strange, not sure why it’s happening and only solution I have is a hail mary, but try changing the extension from .mp4 to .mov—-it should play from QT then, not sure if AE will work with it better. Also, go to “help” and make sure you are running the latest version of after effects(Updates…).

I think you would best start with learning shape layers inside & out. IMO, that’s how those layers were created, wiggled, grow, shake….
Good place to start would be Andrew Devis tutorials on shapes.

Just me, but I would do the work in Adobe Illustrator, create an .ai file and bring that into AE for extrusion.
Also, if you are working with the 3D Render engine, I don’t think it works with transfer modes, so that’s probably where your problem lies.

What you are doing is essentially making a pre-comp. Drag the footage into your curent comp, select the layer and press “cntl+shift+c”, and make sure ‘open comp in new window’ isn’t checked.

I would look into changing the interpretation rules AE is using when it imports the video. It’s a huge text document, but if you can figure out which rules it is using for those videos, you should be able to alter them so that it makes each one 1920×1080 square pixels. I’ve had to do this so AE correctly imports Avid DNxHD for color space, so if I can figure it out, anyone can.

You want to use Wave World(multiple effects on different layers, then use a transfer mode to blend them together) and Caustics. Here’s an older tutorial that should get you started: Dropping into Caustics
