You should post this in the main forum, unique problem that’s more than just AE basic. My 2 cents though would be to go with your first option. That’s how I did it when presented with the same problem, really it’s just a question of math.

Use a luma key, set it to key out brighter and set the threshold low, 16.

Duplicate your 2 solids and put them in a precomp. Create a solid with your final color. Place the precomp above the Final Color in the layer stack, then change the final color’s track matte to “alpha matte”

Can you post a screen grab of your comp window. Use the 3rd to last icon above to post a screen grab of your “5” layer, with masks & effects and anything keyframed twirled opened. After you upload the screen grab, click on it and copy the embed code into your post.

You could try duplicating the layer, junk mask around the eye and then keying the eye color.

Can’t say why it’s crashing, but have you thought of exporting a TIF or PNG sequence. Then if it crashes, you can just pick up where it crashed, render out trouble frame, then continue. Than re-render with audio.
