If you are refering to the cartoon effect under “stylize”, a easy way would be to just split the layer where you want it applied and don’t.

Select your layer and under edit, you will find split layer. Make your edits, then just apply the effect to the segments you want ‘cartooned’

Are you putting the source footage, graphics…on the external drive? That maybe slowing AE as it has to access the external drive to render the each frame. If that’s the case move the footage to the internal drive and see if that speeds up the program.

I have the book also and it’s done wonders for my understanding of expressions. I just copied and pasted your link and it worked fine for me. I’m in the US, so I click the US map and it opens up the files needed without a problem.

that’s one way, generatates a real rapid shaking. For a more organic look, just use wiggle in the location:

Simply the remove grain does a ton of calculations to clean up the footage and it’s doing it on every pixel. And it takes a long time on most computers.

Couple of things you can do. One is investigate network rendering. You install the AE render engine to every computer you can, then setup a network render. Definetely going past the AE Basics stuff, have to open the help to do it.

Second, you said “if there are changes”, assuming you are compositing, you should probably precomp all the footage with just the remove grain effect, then render out and with the choice “replace footage”. If there are changes you won’t be re-rendering the remove grain effect.

Couple things you need to check quickly. First, when you twirl down “text” open up “More options” and change the anchor point grouping to “word”. In your animator change the “Based On” to “word” also.

You should be able to do this just adding keyframes to the “end” value. I just tried it quickly and it worked fine.
