Getting a complicated project from SD to HD is NOT and easy task, unless you cheat and get a plugin, but if you choose to go that route you will definitely encounter a degradation in picture quality.
The solution?
Start from square one. You have half the work already done (keyframes, efx, etc). Just size up your main comp to 1920 x 1080 and get crackin!
No easy way out, but at least you get to bill the client for it.

Agreed with the “see-saw” comment. I hard a hard time making it through the who sequence without feeling queasy. A slight initial push is all I would think is needed, as there’s a lot going on.

Versions don’t matter. I have from 5 up to CS3 lookin pretty on my system. I still use 6.5 a lot the time actually.

You have my sympathy completely. The other week I had a client insist on supplying him with an HD Beta-sp and would not cease and desist no matter how much I tried. Oh, and this was so that he could master a blu-ray dvd. 🙂
I say just fake it.
