Render using the animation codec with millions of colors+ selected. (the + is the alpha channel) also make sure you select straight instead of premultiplied.

It’s more a matter of taste than outdated-ness. There are plenty of interlaced HD formats. If PBS wants you to shoot interlaced, then shoot interlaced. They most likely want 1080i 59.94

Well if you don’t need TC you could just throw all the files that iMovie made into compressor and batch encode them to whatever codec you need. Those new files shouldn’t give you any grief in FCP.

Just do a fresh install of both programs and you should be fine.

It justs depends on your system really and how beefy it is.
I am BAD and tend to have at least 6 apps running at all times, even during capture. Generally it’s not ingest that really taxes your system, but output to tape. That’s when I really shut everything down except FCP.
