Working while capturing
OK, so this is probably a totally moronic question, but I have to ask it. Can you use other programs while capturing in FCP. Not even other FCS apps, just web browser or Word. My inclination is no, but I can’t find a reason why this can’t be done. I would imagine it would increase the likelihood of dropped frames, botched capture, etc. But again I have nothing to prove that? Anybody got anything concrete? Thanks.

Our assistants do that here all the time. I would have said NO, but they apparently have been doing so for a while without MUCH issue. Sometimes it tends to distract them…but no more so I guess than me with my laptop on the edit desk.

You can use the QT Video Recorder.
Bouke Vahl (https://www.videotoolshed.com) have a recorder too.
I don’t know if this one gives you any kind of logging options. The QT Video recorder doesn’t.

If I just capturing DV over firewire (Low demand on my system) I do work in the background all the time. Email, FTP, Dreamweaver, Browser, Word, Etc – It handles it fine.

It justs depends on your system really and how beefy it is.
I am BAD and tend to have at least 6 apps running at all times, even during capture. Generally it’s not ingest that really taxes your system, but output to tape. That’s when I really shut everything down except FCP.
