  • exporting mp4 using AE CS3 to DG Fastchannel specs???

Posted by Chris Cleary on May 21, 2009 at 12:28 am

Ive got a project that I created entirely in After Effects CS3 that needs to be exported to the following specs…

    Standard Definition Commercial Broadcast Specifications:
    • Aspect Ratio 4×3
    • Chroma – Preferred 4:2:2 (MP@ML) (720×512)
    • Chroma – Min 4:2:0 (MP@ML) (720×480) ***
    • GOP All Allowed, IBBP preferred
    • Frames per second 29.97 (NTSC)
    • 2 stereo channel min (audio/video combined)
    • Luminance Level Max 100 IRE
    • Chroma Level Max 120 IRE
    • Setup level 7.5 IRE
    • Timecode Not Used

Ive read a lot of people talking crap about exporting things from AE and how it gets horrible quality so my question is, how do I export to these specs from AE while maintaining the quality Id want for a TV commercial?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

What are the best quality setting for export in AE? Also, what program would you suggest for the proper compression?

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

Sorenson Squeeze will do MP4 conversions from a Quicktime animation codec render out of AE. My experience is that the conversions are of a very high quality and should be more than adequate for submission to Fastchannel.

I use compressor all the time for broadcast stuff. Just use the mpeg-2 program stream preset.

    Joey,
Does the version of Compressor that came with FCP 5.1.4 (Compressor v2.3) have the right high quality Mpeg-2 program stream preset to do this? If so, what is the name of that preset?
    Thanks,
    David

    It should.

I didn’t find a way to do it in Compressor — it may be there, but I just didn’t see it.

So I tried to compress the DV NTSC footage down to Mpeg-2 using Cleaner 6. The footage comes out fine, except for one strange thing…

In the compressed finished video, the frame shifts up and down on the screen. I would say it’s maybe only one or two pixels, but it’s a rhythmic even, shifting.

    Any thoughts?

    Joey,
Here’s a SHORT video sample to what I’m describing:

Are you using the preset? Email me and I can just send it to you. I don’t know why you are getting that flickering.
