    Jimmy,

Wes Plate over at Automatic Duck makes a very elegant software solution for getting projects to/from Avid and FCP, and After Effects as well. I have heard of very few issues for editors who need to work this way.

Another reason to consider Avid as your platform is the Avid Interplay hardware/software. It can be a tremendous benefit to manage shared assets among your rooms. There’s a healthy price tag assoicated with Interplay, but I love the concept and execution with this product. If I had multiple rooms that stayed very busy, not to mention freelance editors and multiple platforms, Interplay would not only play a role in my asset management but would likely factor into my decision on which NLE I would choose.

    Jimmy,

One of the things you may want to consider when making your choice of NLEs is whether or not you have to send your project to someone else for audio sweetening, color correction, etc. And also whether your shop hires freelance editors regularly. These factors may influence your decision to go with the industry standard Avid line (AXP to Nitris) that so many others own or have experience operating.

Certainly the DS line is incredibly powerful and infinitely capable, but there are Symphony Nitris owners, for example, who insist they can do everything their clients ask of them without having to spend for and learn the DS system.

Interestingly, I give a lot of editors struggling with the decision on whether to buy Avid Liquid or Xpress Pro (at the other end of the spectrum) the same advice…in some cases it depends on whether their product needs to be enhanced further with other programs and if they are looking for freelance editors from time to time. The Avid interface shared by everything from Xpress Pro to Nitris makes going between/among the entire line pretty seamless.

Let us know the direction you decide to go.

  • That is rather bizarre behavior for the Avid to do in capture mode. Tell the editor to go to the Settings folder, delete MC State, Site Settings, and Site Attributes. In the project folder, delete the project settings file (.avs). When the editor restarts Avid, try making a new User Profile. It would be a good idea to also delete the 2 media database files on every media drive (.mdb & .pmr).

This takes care of lots of unexplained craziness.

    EJ,

What it depends on is your workflow, and your needs during and after the edit.

What is your final product? Will it be handed to a studio for online editing? Will you get digital media from others who have already been editing with the footage? Will you have freelance editors to whom you send your footage and media?

If so, you definitely should consider the entire Xpress Pro family, including Xpress Pro HD and Xpress Pro Studio.

If your projects are totally closed loop, meaning you do the shooting, editing, output to tape or DVD and no one else is involved with your post production process, there is no reason not to consider Liquid. It has a robust and fine set of tools (some of which I hope Xpress Pro will inherit). It has a somewhat shorter learning curve, and the price point is nice.

Both product families will continue to be developed and supported by Avid.

I say this as am everyday Xpress Pro Studio Complete user, and my needs and interactions with other producers, editors and systems are aligned perfectly for the Xpress family.

I would use Boris or Marquee. There are terrific presets there you can adjust to taste.

Officially, not “outside” of the program. 😉

February 22, 2006 at 2:55 am in reply to: Avid Xpress Pro HD 5.2.3 now available

    Herb,

At the link I included, click on “I Accept.”

Then, at the FTP site, open the folder “Editor DNA HD.”

Then open the folder “Xpress Pro HD 5.2.3.”

    Remember, 5.2.3 is a CPR.

“A CPR, or Customer Patch Release, is an update for Avid products intended to address specific problems…”

For me, it adds the formats I’ve been looking for Avid to support that originate from the HVX200 camera.

“Does mojo downconvert 720p 23.976 to an SD monitor?”

    No, not yet.

“Should the project be started and maintained as 720P23.976 as most of the footage is p2 dvcprohd.”

Yes, that is how you do it.

“How then to import 30i SD clips?”

Or, you can do the obligatory Shift+Ctrl+A to deselect ALL tracks. Ctrl+A to select all tracks.

Or, Shift+drag mouse over all the tracks from top to bottom or bottom to top to select/deselect tracks.
