I did a test for you.
Exported a 10 second clip shot 720p from Avid as a QT Movie (does not allow QT Reference). The resulting file was 109 MB in size. Took about 20 seconds to export.
Opened it in After Effects. Applied a filter. Rendered out an .avi at best settings. Resulting file was 650 MB in size. Took 1 minute, 23 seconds to render.
Played it back. Looks terrific. Imported it back into Avid. Took 35 seconds to import. Plays back with no problems. Looks just like the original only with an effect.

Mike,
Send over a QT reference file. That way, it takes up a small amount of room basically pointing back to the Avid files. Do you use QT reference with your AE projects now?

I think it really comes down to how much time and involvement you want to spend on the IT side versus the editing side.
True, every editor needs to know a great deal of the technical these days to be able to fine tune and troubleshoot issues that can leave you dead in the water otherwise.
But there is a peace of mind and time savings factor to purchasing an “Avid approved system.” If your workflow is all about deadlines and volume, you may not have time to learn everything there is to know about building your own system.
Avid does not try and squash the enthusiasm of the individual who chooses to go it alone. Just know that since “roll your own” versions have so many variables, these machines can’t be tested and therefore not supported.
If you choose to build, do yourself a favor and at least go by Avid’s requirements. You’ll save yourself tons of headaches and time.

What kind of rendering are you talking about? Xpress Pro HD captures and edits DVCPro and DVCPro HD natively, so no rendering there.
Rendering time on effects using this footage are not different from effects on SD footage, for the most part.

Jim,
Try it again using Sorensen. Create a new filter and call it “Remove Auto Deinterlacing.” In that filter, (yes, you guessed it) uncheck the “deinterlace” field.
Render yourself a short clip where these problems occur and tell us if that fixes what ails ya.

Native HDV. Edit with it and then output Avid DNxHD. Looks like uncompressed HD, has the same bandwidth and footprint as uncompressed SD.

It’s pretty good…got mine at ResFest in NYC. But don’t expect footage shot with the camera. Panasonic has not released any footage to the public yet.
Thanks,

I do believe that Serious Magic is developing a DV Rack alternative to the Firestore and P2 card approach.

October 1, 2005 at 7:48 pm in reply to: P2 limited / patented to panasonic or 3rd party offers possible ?Jan has mentioned that Panasonic is willing to license the production of P2 cards to 3rd parties. But the quality standards are incredibly high. Panasonic will not allow “off the shelf” SD cards and components to pass as acceptable for use with Panasonic cameras.
