August 10, 2007 at 3:40 pm in reply to: Title Tool is typing vertically and driving me a little nutsWhat font are you using? It sounds like something I’ve seen when Avid and/or Windows sees a cheap TrueType font.
If it is a “normal” font, then trash your user settings and MCState, reboot, and try this again.

Dan,
Avid started supporting DVCPROHD natively with version 5.0 around the beginning of the year in 2005.

I’m not familiar with how you are using 5.7 and exporting directly from Avid to .flv.
Depending on the version of Squeeze you have, I would export a QuickTime reference file to Squeeze and make your .flv from there.
Is this not an option?

HDV is an acquisition format. The codec doesn’t hold up well to compositing or multiple generations. DNxHD is a mastering codec available in Avid you can use by transcoding your HDV footage. It looks great and does not require “exporting” like HDV.
What are your deliverables? That will determine whether you need the extra step of exporting out to HDV.

My workflow now consists of consolidating to bare drives which I put on the shelf for 1 or 2 years (or longer, depending on client needs). At the end of that time, I contact the client and determine if any changes/updates are possible for their projects. If the answer is a definite “no,” then I erase the drive and use it for another project.
At $100 or so for a drive, it’s cheaper than Blu-Ray, DVDs, etc. The only question is how long it is practical to keep hard drives sitting around unused with the expectation that they will work.

Oh, by all means, yes! I’ve had much lower temperature conditions cause all kinds of errors and problems. Pay attention to not only the overall temperature, but airflow as well. Dissapating heat is more important than intorducing cooler air.

Do you have the Digi 002 mixer hooked up while you are capturing? If so, you will not get the 32Hz option. You’ll need to capture directly into the computer via firwire to get that option to show.

You can bring up your scopes by clicking on “Tools/Video Input.”
You can also see either a waveform or vectorscope as one of the windows in your color correction toolset.

June 27, 2007 at 11:57 pm in reply to: What firewire card should be used with HP nw9440 laptop?Avid does not support PCMCIA firewire devices, so I digitize FW sources via the jack and save off to USB drives for the nw9440. I have few if any problems with read/write throughput from DV footage. DVCPROHD will hiccup at full rez using USB, in my experience. If you drop your screen rez to yellow/green, it plays fine, even full screen.
I have tried every FW800 PCMCIA card I can think of with no luck, BTW.
I don’t know WHY HP had to get rid of the expresscard slot for this laptop! The previous flagship laptop, the nx9600, which I still have, has both PCMCIA and expresscard. My thought was to try and equip the nw9440 with the CalDigit expresscard adapter and get a SATA raid up and running. But CalDigit doesn’t offer a PCMCIA solution……
