what is the best way to archive finished projects & raw videos?

I am utilizing a tapeless workflow in post and yet i am finding difficulty in archiving it. i used to archive the final video in dvd as a raw file but problem is the size when it goes beyond 4G. Burning it as a playable dvd post some problems too when you need to pull it out & convert it to another format (interlacing problems start to surface here) plus sometimes you need also to pull out something from the raw material so you need to have that archived properly too.

I can’t afford to transition in blu ray right now.

avid & tapeless gurus, i need your help on this one.

What’s wrong with decomposing your final sequence and consolidating across multiple DVDs if necessary?

i understand how consolidating works but why do i need to decompose?

when you consolidate your media onto another drive, it makes copies of your original media right? will the image quality be affected in the process of reproducing another copy of the media?

My workflow now consists of consolidating to bare drives which I put on the shelf for 1 or 2 years (or longer, depending on client needs). At the end of that time, I contact the client and determine if any changes/updates are possible for their projects. If the answer is a definite “no,” then I erase the drive and use it for another project.

At $100 or so for a drive, it’s cheaper than Blu-Ray, DVDs, etc. The only question is how long it is practical to keep hard drives sitting around unused with the expectation that they will work.

By decomposing your final sequence, you create a folder that contains only the clips that were used. It’s a way to limit the amount of footage you’re archiving. Of course, if you need all the raw media this won’t work.

You won’t lose any quality through consolidation as it simply copies the media to a new location. Be aware that alpha channel graphics won’t consolidate (in my experience), and will stop the process with an error about negative indexes. That’s another reason it might be good to decompose your sequence before consolidating; you can then choose only footage.
