This artful approach that Terry describes is the best way to go about it, to be sure. Give it a try, you will learn a lot about your Avid’s capabilities as you proceed.
Boris RED (Avid FX) has a day for night filter, too, that might work for you. It is customizable, like all Boris filters, so you may get what you’re looking for with this approach.

Sure. Just drag your sequence into the source monitor (I’m using the Source/Record Editing Toolset). Then you can cut this “clip” into your timeline.

Andy,
The best way is to send the .mpg to Sorenson and convert it to an .mov, or, if it is playable via a DVD player, capture the footage from either the digital or analog outputs of the player.

So you have Avid Xpress Pro and don’t have Boris (or Avid FX)?

I’ve been using both the .wmv and .mov HD presets in Squeeze. On a show in Orlando, I loaded the former into a Grass Valley Turbo for playback on two 12′ X 16′ screens. Looked great.

Do you have Boris FX or RED (also known as Avid FX)? If so, apply a Boris transition effect on an edit in your timeline and then look through the Boris library browser. You will find tons of great effects and tons of cheesy effects that are infinately customizable. The great thing is that with the library browser, you can see exactly how the effect will look on your video. If you want to tweak the effect a bit, you can do so and save it as yet another effect, there for you to use again and again.Regards,

I’m sorry…I didn’t know it was interlaced in MCA and progressive in Nitris.
