I’m trying to get a .mpg file into the Avid and have it look good. I was given a .mpg file that looks great when played back on the computer but Avid will not accept it. I tried to convert it to a Quicktime file and it worked but doesn’t look too good(looks like it has a film effect on it).

Does anyone know the best way to get a .mpg file to play in an Avid system?

Using Avid Xpress Pro on a HP 8200 computer.

    Thanks for any help.

    Andy,

The best way is to send the .mpg to Sorenson and convert it to an .mov, or, if it is playable via a DVD player, capture the footage from either the digital or analog outputs of the player.

Converting it to a quicktime using a lossless codec like Animation (if you have the space). Your stutter maybe the result of a field order mismatch…often MPEG2s from DVD and such tend to be upper field first, will DV and others are commonly lower field first. A mismatch might cause some problems.
If the MPEG was sourced from film it might also have a 3:2 pulldown, there may be options in your encoder to keep the pulldown or create 24p…you’ll most likely want to keep the pulldown.
Other possiblities…the MPEG clip is PAL, while your encoded clip is NTSC…or the mpeg just had a non-standard frame rate for video like 15fps or something…this would look fine on a computer when played back, but would have to be frame doubled to pad it out to 29.97 or 25 for video…causing a noticeable stutter.

Thanks for the response guys. I tried sorenson and I can’t seem to get to look acceptable. I just made a DVD from the mpeg files in sonic and it looks good there. Then I’ll capture from a dvd player. It seems like the long way around the barn but it works.
