What firewire card should be used with HP nw9440 laptop?
The HP has but one firewire port. Do I need to add a firewire card to the laptop? Should it have two firewire ports or just one?
I’m thinking practical editing . . . would it be normal for drives to be on USB and the camera digitizing in via firewire. Or, do I need the extra firewire card so both drives and camera can be on firewire at the same time to facilitate digitizing?

Avid does not support PCMCIA firewire devices, so I digitize FW sources via the jack and save off to USB drives for the nw9440. I have few if any problems with read/write throughput from DV footage. DVCPROHD will hiccup at full rez using USB, in my experience. If you drop your screen rez to yellow/green, it plays fine, even full screen.
I have tried every FW800 PCMCIA card I can think of with no luck, BTW.
I don’t know WHY HP had to get rid of the expresscard slot for this laptop! The previous flagship laptop, the nx9600, which I still have, has both PCMCIA and expresscard. My thought was to try and equip the nw9440 with the CalDigit expresscard adapter and get a SATA raid up and running. But CalDigit doesn’t offer a PCMCIA solution……

The boot drive should be IDE, SCSI, or SATA 7200 RPM. Do not use internal SCSI as a boot device if you also plan on adding external SCSI drives (in which case use IDE or SATA). -
