I would suggest the cheapest DV or HDV camcorder you can find. I have a Canon HV20 that does most of the HDV flavors and DV and you get a monitor and a small speaker and a camera and you can get a bunch of them for the price any HDV deck.

Some will say they don’t hold up. That has not been my experience.

The signal standard is the same. What is delivering the signal is a world apart. If I plug a consumer camera into a D5 deck I will have a pristine digital recording, but will it look good?

VHS=Digibeta? I spent many many years in the analog world. I remember when you couldn’t broadcast a vhs tape.

Yes, maintain quality but listen to Shane.

Once they have timecodes They should be able to import all the tracks they want. I give then 4 mono tracks as they define it. Usually CH1-sync, CH2-Nat, CH3-4 anthing I think they might find useful.

Lets look at just the sync stuff. My guys open the edl ch1 and it relates to the 8 track files they use. This is then put into the protools project. This is repeated for all tracks so they end up with a 32 track sequence that matches my 4 channel edl.

Now I’m not sure if the edl converter is a separate utility or part of protools.

For double system sound the Protools guys around here ask for an edl along with the OMF. They used the edl to conform the audio which,as I understand it, just drops into the protools project.

I have the MXO2 and 1760 also. While the TC display works fine with decks I have never gotten to work with FCP. If you use the cross hatch you can see the vitc on tape playback but FCP (or quicktime) strips all that stuff off.

Look for a Canon HV20, HV30 or HV40 consumer HDV camera. They play all flavors of Canon HDV. I’ve been using an HV20 for years with only 1 issue. Play the tape a bit before launching FCP to assure the deck and format is properly recognized.
