  • What deck to use for capturing from mini DV?

I have a video editing lab with 12 Mac Pros. Right now, we have three JVC SR-DVM700’s, one JVC SR-DVM600, and a couple of older JVC SR-VS30U’s.

We are wanting to replace the SR-VS30U’s, as they have continuously have been having communication problems with FCP.

We were going to purchase two more JVC SR-DVM700’s, but they are now discontinued and I don’t see any replacement options from JVC.

So, what are my options? All we are doing is capturing video from mini DV tapes in FCP for editing. We would prefer to get decks, but as a last resort I suppose we could look at cameras with firewire to capture from.

Sony HVR-M15AU. Similar to the old DSR-11, but with HDV capabilities and DV compatibility. Costs less than $2k apiece.

I would suggest the cheapest DV or HDV camcorder you can find. I have a Canon HV20 that does most of the HDV flavors and DV and you get a monitor and a small speaker and a camera and you can get a bunch of them for the price any HDV deck.

Some will say they don’t hold up. That has not been my experience.
