No. I meant tapes shot on non-Canon cameras sometimes don’t play well on Canons. My HV20 is solid with any Canon HDV and 70-30 with HDV tapes from a Sony. Good luck

My HV20 has been mosty fine with only the occasional TC hiccup. Canons can be iffy with non-canon tapes. Have you run a cleaning tape thru it?

Craigslist in my area is full of G4 MacLappys with the slot you need. Usually a few hundred bucks. More than enough horsepower for file transfer. You could even put FCP 6 on it for preview.

I have a 1st generation unibody 15″ MBP with the 3/4 express slot, MXO2 and a Flanders 1760. I deliver 1 hour 1080i shows for broadcast with this system. It works fine with these caveats:

You are limited to FW 800 for your drives. Not a problem for me as I work in DVCPRO HD. I can usually get 2-3 streams of realtime playback. I think Prores work work too but maybe not HQ.

I don’t do many effects. Just color correction. Motions works but not very well. The video card just doesn’t have the guts for it. But you can do simple things like text animations and chroma keying.

Rendering out approval files can be slow. You can get the MXOs with an h264 accelerator if you do a lot of that. I you have to render out a lot of different file types then a quad or octo core Mac Pro would be much faster.

I use a 24″ second computer monitor as the 15″screen is not enough real estate to work efficiently. And add a real keyboard and mouse.

So you could get a new 17″ MBP and have a very workable system. However for around the same $$$ you can get a quad core MacPro with a much better video card if you plan to do effects.

Do you have terminators on the component loop outs? Could try removing them. Most modern gear self-terminates now.

Since you’re connected analog you might be double terminated. Are you looping to or through other gear? Look for 75 ohm switches by the connections. If you are looped through any other gear that is terminated you would get less signal and a dimmer picture.

Not sure where you’re getting the DVCPRO HDV Setting. The camera is putting out HDV. If you want DVCPRO then it’s 2 steps. Ingest the HDV. Convert the HDV to DVCPRO.

Here’s what works most of the time for me. With everything off, connect the cam to the computer. Turn on the camera and play the tape. Make sure you see HDV in the display–Not DV. Turn on the Mac and fire up FCP with the appropriate HDV Capture present and digitize. On my system if FCP detects DV on the firewire it won’t ever recognize HDV unitl I either restart FCP or sometimes reboot.
