I have a Sony DSR-1500A which works really well in my situation. Plays DV, DVCam and DVCPro 25, records DV or DVCam, and with the optional cards, it has inputs and outputs for composite, component, SDI and firewire. I’ve been doing more dubs to/from DV and this keeps me from tying up the AJA IO or FCP as a signal converter. Nothing against the other decks mentioned but this one has a lot of pro features that make it very flexible.

So in the system that doesn’t have this problem, the differences are the OS and FCP versions, but the Kona hardware is the same on both? Sure sounds like an Apple problem of some sort, not AJA. I’m sure you’ll hear back from AJA long before Apple, though.

Media Manager has always been screwed up. Even if it worked a little better in 4.5, it wasn’t that great. The EDL exporter has never really worked correctly either. Try exporting a Source Sort EDL and you’ll see what I mean. I have to do this all the time for telecine sessions, and I have to open the EDL in MS Word and manually resort the events in the EDL correctly.
There was a lot of noise made on the forums over the last year about Media Mangler disfunctionality, but it seems like Apple either doesn’t care or has some serious database issues with FCP that they can’t figure out how to fix.

I’m no longer having the 1 frame early issue on Edit to Tape. Not sure what fixed it but try reinstalling the IO drivers. Below I’ve added my specs next to yours in parentheses.

I’m having some of the same issues. I think it may be related to OS 10.3.9. Let me check my system specs tomorrow and see how they’re different from yours. I think I’m still on Quicktime 6.5.2 and am not using the beta IO drivers, so those may not be the issue. I’ll post back-

Thanks for all the input. As it turns out they will be using an Infinit for graphics, so I don’t have to do the superblack tape after all. Just takes weeding through a few layers of non-technical folks to get through to the person that knows what they really need.

Unfortunately the logo has a heavy black drop shadow. I guess the next step is getting in touch with the end user to find out if their DVE or character generator has a key channel. It’s for big screen display of the logo at a sporting event, so I’m not sure what their gear is.

Slomo with interpolation (i.e. frame blending checked) often produces this type of artifact on fine lines or areas with detail like the shrubs. FCP is creating blended frames between the existing ones by blurring a combination of the frame before and frame after, so the shimmering effect is the result of every other frame being blurred to smooth out the motion. It works well on motion but not on areas of static high detail. Twixtor (by ReVision FX) is a plugin that deals with this well, but you may be able to accomplish a better result by isolating the moving parts of the image with a moving mask (around the people), and place that layer over the static background played at 100% to avoid the artifacts. Twixtor does this by allowing you to define certain parts of a shot with masks and change the speed of each with different choices for interpolation.
