And – this is both with Wacom Intuos 3 as well as Wacom Intuos Pro.

This is still a problem for us. Colorista is a plugin we use for basic color correction and when we lift the Wacom pen, the value we’re adjusting in the color wheels freaks out and skates off wherever it wants to go. This was not a problem in Final Cut Pro 7. It would be great if Adobe paid as much attention to fixing longstanding problems as they do introducing cute new features, but now that most of us are on subscription it seems their incentives are reduced.

  • Interesting because it shows just how dated the Mac Pro really is?

“a lot of research in usability to overhaul the GUI” is not the same thing as a complete interface or feature copy so there’s NO learning curve at all. I’m speaking from the standpoint of a user who is trying to get up to speed on the new Smoke editing interface. It’s good and I’m sure I can learn it. But if I didn’t have to spend a month or two getting fast on a new interface, it would be nice. I’m sure I’m not alone.

I’m not saying this is likely, only that it’s a potential benefit if Autodesk did purchase Avid, that they could use what they want from the Avid interface (for instance the keyboard based trimming) without fear of a lawsuit.

[Bernhard Grininger] “The only thing Autodesk
could benefit of is Audio, like Eric already said.”

I think Autodesk could benefit greatly if they purchased Media Composer and ported the editing interface into Smoke on Mac. Even if it’s just the skin of the interface with Smoke’s frame based file structure underneath. Immediate familiarity with an editing interface for thousands of editors combined with the depth of effects in Smoke would be a great combination.

Not that Smoke’s editing interface is bad, I actually like it a lot, but the muscle memory of many years on another platform doesn’t translate immediately.

“What? Manual? It has a manual? That’s so 1999.

    Just kidding.

With great power comes great responsibility.”

Actually, I never read the manual either, but you’re right it was 1999! When I worked on Smoke they flew a nice French Canadian fellow in from Montreal for a week to train me. That was included in the $350,000 pricetag I guess. How things change. I’m assuming I would be forced to read the manual this time around.

“Although, it doesn’t look like an intuitive interface, but whatever, I can handle it!”

It’s not something you can just noodle around in and figure out completely on your own without reading the manual or working through some tutorials or training, but once you learn the interface, it’s very efficient and artist-oriented. Light-years ahead of FCP, Premiere or Avid in terms of interface design, with gestural controls and contextual menu panels all over the place that make floating windows and multiple screens unnecessary. I loved working on it when it was only available on Unix, and would certainly consider it if it became affordable.

Unfortunately none of my clients would pay more to work on a $15k platform vs the combo of FCP and After Effects, otherwise I would have made the leap sooner.

[Tom Daigon] “Its not even close to competitive pricing offers that are available from Avid or Adobe these days”

That’s because the offerings from Avid and Adobe are not true competitors to Smoke.

    Bill-

Any update on this issue? Anyone from Blackmagic care to comment further? I’m about to cancel my order for the Shuttle until I hear it’s working…it would be a really bad thing to buy a couple of expensive non-returnable SSDs and find out the Shuttle doesn’t work as advertised.
