I posted this in a thread a little ways down, but given the importance of better Media Management, I’ll post it again. I’m sure we’ll get more details from those actually attending the show, but this is a quote from the Apple website, under the heading Workgroup Editing:

Actually, here’s a quote from Apple’s site regarding FCP5’s Media Management:

Both After Effects and Combustion can cache frames into RAM for previewing work before rendering. Combustion has a feature where you can have a dual viewport, one for the loop playback of your work and the other for your paint operator…so as you paint frames, combustion will continue to loop, caching your changes into RAM and playing back as you work. Pretty cool stuff.

What types of video signals do you need to use with ProTools? SDI, Component or just composite analog? Our audio suite uses the Canopus ADVC-100 (firewire interface) quite effectively for capturing video, but it only handles composite and Svideo signals. The DBeta, BetaSP, & DV decks all have composite outputs so we just patch those in. Not sure if this will work for your situation or not.

So is Softraid able to pinpoint problems on a specific drive even though the drives appear as one volume to the computer? Or does it give you a general warning about i/o errors and then you have to figure out which disk using tests?

I have not had the opportunity to work in 24p yet. I mean, I’ve worked with footage shot on a 24p camera, but captured at 30 fps, and I’d like to run some 24p tests before I’m under the gun with a client project.
So when you work in 24p, such that you’re able to see this on your PVM monitor, what’s the workflow? Do you use a different capture setup with FCP or is it a setting on the deck to tell it not to create 3:2 (or whatever the DVCam equivalent is)? Or does the camera have to be set to shoot in 24p, not 30i to begin with? I’m just a little green to the process and would be interested to hear how it works.

1. reliable MEDIA MANAGEMENT (just in case anyone from Apple is actually counting the votes on this one)
2. 4:4:4 uncompressed codec for higher quality
3. live scopes as mentioned
4. Source-sort EDLs that actually do what the manual says they will (they’re completely whacked and out of order)
5. ability to add dissolves quicker with hotkeys (like Avid’s…you get to specify length when you add a dissolve rather than having to change it in the effect window or after adding it to the sequence)
5a. ability to add dissolves to multiple edits with one keystroke (i.e. highlight a bunch of cuts, then hit the dissolve key)

I guess my main question is how the drives perform as they get full. Do you plan to test this?
