Re: What could be improved in FCP?
I am helping to write a review of FCP.
I would like to know what functions users would like to see added or improved.
Apple will release an update v.5 whenever they do so
and many of these features will no doubt be addressed
This is not about FCE and the lack of comparative features.However, your insights would be greatly appreciated.
Some starters – correct me if I’m wrong –
AU plug-ins to display their native GUI
user colour choices for timeline media
FXScript to address the whole program
Choice of larger fonts for GUI
HDV functionality improved
XML integration with Logic fixed (107-region problem)
Peak level meter to work according to PPM spec.thanks

Version 4.5 has been fantastic for me. Almost all my needs/wants have been met, But my last few nitpicks are:
Phantom marks (remember these from avid? It’s just a semi transparent in or out marker that shows you where the left out fourth point will be when using 3 point editing)
Better Scaling quality
Ability to specify exact speed of scrolling text
Something to address sluggishness of VERY large projects/Timelines-tim

More customizable interface.
Curves in color correction tool.

AH! I forgot about audio. Unless I’m mistaken (I’m still on FCP 4.1) Audio in and out is still only 2 tracks at a time. If I’m wrong, I’ll be very happy.

You can have up to 24 tracks out, eight to hardware, but you have to have settings and devices that support that.

Media Management, Media Management and if there’s still time left: the Media Management could be more reliable.

Add Applescripting. I’d like to be able to write a script to do something like ‘open project A, render sequences 3 and 5. Close Project A. Open Project B. Render sequence 2. Send email when render is finished. Export sequence 7 to compressor. Close FCP. Open APack. Open clip 4. Set encoding mode to 2/0 ……….’

Multi-cam support
Hardware control of audio level on-the-fly
Automatic scrolling of timeline to keep up with playhead -
Larger buttons would be nice, other than that I love FCP!

A better way of handling speed changes
Integrate Livetype directly into FCP with ability to edit text over video
Better handling of ease in and out
Larger fonts in interface
Ability to preview media when importing files (like you can in the finder)
Automatic import of renders to bin or timeline (ie: when exporting to Quicktime)

I echo Media management PLEASE!
Also PLEEEEEASE fix the mastering tool so that the buttons ACTUALLY work instead of having to drag and drop the sequence on that overlay. I’m sick of explaining to new users about this silly bug that makes a professional application come off as extremely unprofessional.
