I’m not an engineer either, but I think the Kona2 is already being used on Linux systems (RaveHD???) and since PCI is a hardware standard, it would probably just require a software update from AJA/Apple.
Just one guy’s very uninformed opinion.

Does the UL4D show a significant performance advantage when the RAID is U160 or just with U320 drives?

Depending on how long the cable run to the monitor is (mine is about 65 feet from the rack in the next room), converting the signal from SDI to component at the monitor vs running component cables all the way from the rack does seem to have a positive affect on image quality. I don’t have the SDI board, but I decided to send an SDI signal from the rack and use an AJA converter close to the monitor with a 3 foot component Canare cable into the monitor.

Apple must have decided that it’s not in their interest to keep up with the PC world where graphics cards and expansion slots are concerned. Don’t even try to tell me they couldn’t compete if they really wanted to. Everyone’s been begging for true pro capabilities for YEARS and yet they haven’t bothered to keep up. Which is why, like Marco, I choose to do graphics on the PC side and probably will stay that way. Apple will continue to write and market software that’s good enough to sell hardware but never really lives up to it’s advertised capabilities (ex. I still can’t even do an accurate Cmode EDL from FCP for a telecine session – this has NEVER worked). And thus the love/hate cycle continues.

Tim,
It would help to know more details about your system…monitoring setup, sequence settings, graphics creation workflow, etc. in order to better be able to answer your question. I do almost all my serious graphics work in either After Effects or Combustion, but FCP is capable of fairly decent graphics with the correct settings.

OK, at least someone credible who actually went to the show agrees with me. It’s a relativity thing – last year was a real turning point, this year built on last.

Hey, I never thought about using such a post to find out what’s really cool at NAB, but I guess it worked. Thanks for all the feedback. I didn’t get to go to the show, but the feedback I had read was nowhere near the buzz from last year with FCP HD, Decklink and AJA duking it out etc.
Yes, FCP’s multicam and more than 2 channel audio are very cool, but they’re more of a “well it’s about time” upgrade rather than a “wow I didn’t expect that!” upgrade.
I’ve already decided to buy the Kona 2, so maybe it’s that there wasn’t any news to shake things up or change my mind.
Anyway, it’s good to hear all your thoughts. I’m a little more jazzed now.

Yes it does look the same. But maybe they actually made it do what it’s supposed to do, which wouldn’t require an interface change. I’d be thrilled with “as advertised” functionality for now.
