superblack out of IO
Posted by Joe Murray on June 16, 2005 at 2:16 pmI’ve been asked to put a logo over superblack on BetaSP for use in a live TV truck. Can I do this with FCP and IO or do I need to go through a production switcher/linear suite?
thanks-

June 17, 2005 at 12:57 pmThe very nature of Beta SP, and it’s TBC will not allow this, as Sony analog products put a setup level of 7.5 on things. Superblack is dropping the signal below the setup level – like at 0 IRE. The minute this signal is recorded on Beta SP, the black level will no longer be at 0 IRE, but at 7.5
If the logo has no elements that are close to this level (everything is above 20 IRE) , then the truck will have no issues luminance keying this.
From a single tape machine, you can’t generate a seperate key signal (alpha channel signal). If they have a CG, and they can capture your tape into their CG, they might be able to create an alpha channel or external key signal from this, and key your logo.Bob Zelin

June 17, 2005 at 9:36 pmSee if they can take a DVCAM tape. If so you can go out at 0% black level SDI from FCP.

June 17, 2005 at 10:51 pmUnfortunately the logo has a heavy black drop shadow. I guess the next step is getting in touch with the end user to find out if their DVE or character generator has a key channel. It’s for big screen display of the logo at a sporting event, so I’m not sure what their gear is.

June 20, 2005 at 5:57 pmThe best/cleanest solution would be to provide them with a TIF or PSD file that contains alpha channel.

June 21, 2005 at 1:01 pmYes, I did this for a show. All you have to do is load the Japanese IO presets. Japan uses 0 IRE as black (superblack). Then just choose the correct preset and go to tape. Watch you scopes you will see the the blacks are at 0.
good luck.
also i believe the beta version of the IO control panel will let you do this as well

June 21, 2005 at 2:46 pmFrom what I recall when I was an online editor I could set via internal dip switches in the bvw series betacam record machines the ability to record zero black.
That was how we recorded logos etc that required super black.
Sorry I don’t remember which board the dip switch is located on.
I would recommend contacting either a rental house engineering department for additional information.

June 22, 2005 at 2:05 pmThanks for all the input. As it turns out they will be using an Infinit for graphics, so I don’t have to do the superblack tape after all. Just takes weeding through a few layers of non-technical folks to get through to the person that knows what they really need.
