Only problem with Cleaner is it doesn’t seem Discreet is ever going to update it again. Sorensen Squeeze and ProCoder are two that seem to be a little more on the ball now.

Media Manager doesn’t work so well in FCP 5. Have you done a lot of effects in the timeline (moves, scaling, filters, etc.)? If not, it’s probably easier just to export an EDL (File>Export>EDL) than using MM. Export the EDL, probably using the CMX3600 setting, and then reimport the EDL. Then right-click (or control-click) on the new sequence created by the EDL and select Batch Capture, and you’ll be able to specify how you want to recapture the clips.
If you’ve done lots of effects, keep trying different methods with Media Manager (check out FCP tips at http://www.kenstone.net), otherwise you’ll have to copy and paste all your effects from the old timeline to the new EDL one.

If you dupe the tapes, you eliminate the whole purpose of time of day code, assuming there are multiple tapes all taking code from the same TOD generator. This goes hand in hand with the new multicam feature in FCP 5…if you’re shooting with a number of cameras at an event (say a sporting event like a race), it’s great to have multicam to cut between angles, but not if FCP can’t handle TOD code on the source tapes. The time wasted with workarounds in FCP might make it worthwhile to buy the least expensive Avid software just to capture and edit a show like this. I love FCP in a lot of ways, but Apple keeps ignoring really important fixes that need to be made, like this one and the Media Mangler debacle. If you’re going to call something “Pro” then make it live up to its name with real professional features that actually work.

FCP does not do a great job of upsampling audio files. You may even have better luck converting the file in Quicktime than FCP, although you would think FCP would just use Quicktime for this. Anyway, glad you found a workaround. Always ask for aiff or wav files, with 48khz audio and you’ll have no problems.

Does AJA make a PC codec? I’ve been rendering in the Blackmagic 10 bit for a long time and playing it back realtime via the IO. Are you saying these won’t play back through the Kona 2?

Or could you just turn off all the layers in the sequences in 4.5, save the project, then open it in 5 and copy and paste all the layers from the old sequence into a new one?

Thicker font may help, or you could try adding a half-pixel blur to the type, as long as this doesn’t degrade it too much. The blur will help it cross scanlines more cleanly.
