Can’t open 4.5 in 5
Posted by Ken Pugh on July 13, 2005 at 4:46 pmI’m having trouble opening some of my old 4.5 projects in 5. Especially the larger ones. One project is 96Megs and either gives a general error or just nothing.
Is this a known problem, or are my files perhaps corrupt?
Any similar experiences good to hear about,
Thanks,
Ken.

July 13, 2005 at 4:57 pmSorry, I’ve not heard of any problems with 4.5 files opening up into 5+.
Are you just double-clicking them? Try using Open?

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

July 13, 2005 at 9:01 pmI’ve had this happen to me too.
With some research I found that the projects that would not
open had multiple video layers, up to 8, and FCP5 didn’t want to
open those. Here’s what I did:
Open the project in FCP4.5.
Close all your sequences so when you close the project
none of your sequences are open. This means when you
open this project in FCP5, no sequences will be open.
Now open in FCP5. My guess is the project will open,
but if you open any sequences that have multiple
video layers, my bet is it will crash. Try this to see
what happens.
Now when you are in FCP4.5, you could turn off
the upper video layers in the offending sequences
so these will open in FCP5 too. But the moment
you click the green visual button, they will crash.
At least this is my experience.Dan

July 13, 2005 at 9:54 pmThis sounds like the same issue. I can open small edits with just a few layers, but the ones I’m having trouble with certainly have many layers, most probably eight as you say. I guess i could split the main sequence in 4.5 down to two with 4 layers. open in 5 and recombine to make 8.
Thanks for the info,
Ken.

July 14, 2005 at 1:30 amOr could you just turn off all the layers in the sequences in 4.5, save the project, then open it in 5 and copy and paste all the layers from the old sequence into a new one?
