I have the MAudio speakers and really like them. I’ve had both Alesis and KRKs in the past but the MAudios sound more accurate in my suite. I also have a 10 inch powered subwoofer paired with them but that would put you a little over your budget.

Slightly off-topic to the original post, but hopefully relevant…has anyone else ever considered what a major headache it would be if the Boris title didn’t exist in FCP in some future version? Apple doesn’t own Boris do they? So we don’t really have a guarantee it will always be there. I’ve already had at least one project screwed up when a font needed by this tool was not activated, and nothing in FCP warned me so the tool just substituted a different font. In a long-form program it’s not hard to miss one title that uses an incorrect font. That experience was what got me thinking about whether I can really count on it always being there, or always working, or ever being updated to warn about unavailable fonts (not likely). Which is why I end up using targas with alpha channels in so many sequences, because those files can be saved with the project archive, and if they’re not available when you open the project FCP will tell you. Basically, encode to mpeg-2 using DG’s specs, upload to their ftp site, then place an order to send the spot through their online order system. You have to go through a testing period with DG to make sure your files are encoded properly to work with your system. This was the biggest hassle of the whole process but once we got it working everything else has been fairly simple. Price will depend on how much you use the service. We sometimes send as many as 10 spots to 50 stations, so we get a pretty good rate, at least I hope we do. A good way to go is to get pricing from their competitors as a point of comparison.

The only reason I see this differently is that it does take longer to design in HD since you’re pushing more pixels with each frame. Interactivity and cache renders take longer, so even if you don’t bill for any potential extra render time, it still takes longer to create art in HD than in SD. We usually estimate 25% longer but it depends on the concept and design.

If you upload a full-resolution mpeg-2 to DGFastChannel, they can deliver a BetaSP to the station next day for a little more than digital delivery. Or a DVD, DVCPro, DBeta, whatever format you need. I have all of these decks in house and sometimes in a time crunch I’ll have DG make the dubs anyway.

I have had this problem as well, going back several versions of FCP. It’s one of those things that just never gets fixed. I usually just end up creating the graphic in Photoshop and importing it.

This used to be the case but recently I’ve noticed that changing the sequence settings works differently than it used to. For instance a DVCPro50 sequence with 10 bit clips has to render, but change the settings to 10 bit and the clips play realtime. Not sure when this changed.

I’ll second that. Why tailor your audio and video to the people with crappy equipment? The people who really care are the ones with decent speakers and screens. In the 70s and 80s, it made more sense to mix for the masses, but the quality of screens and speakers has come a long way. Now if only we could get the broadcasters to care as much about the quality of the signal they’re sending…
