We are currently building a new FCP suite. We deal mainly with standard definition video for corporate clients, much of witch end up on the web. This suite is setting us up for future HD expansion. Here is what we have; G5 with 2x duel-core Intel xeon 2.66 GHz, 3GB ram, Kona LHe card, 2.5 TB drive space.

We had been using $200 computer speakers in our other suites but we want to make the jump up to “real” audio monitors. Looking for good quality & relatively small size, budget is around $500. Any recommendations?

    Thanks

The Lhe puts out 2 channel XLR analog audio, which is great. You can get a small 6 channel Mackie mixer for $200, and then a pair of powered/shielded speakers (just got a pair of KRK Rockit 5″ for an edit bay, sound pretty good for the price and size) for about $300

We go out to a mixer and into an amp where I use Mission 2 way speakers model 701. The sound is so good I often have clients respond to comments I’ve made on set that are now coming over the edit system. They actually think it’s me – here now talking live. I just went to a big retailer that had all their speaker selection hooked up to a switcher and they let me operate the remote where I surfed through the models til I narrowed it down to just 2 types and I went for the Missions which also fit snugley horizontily in racks.

I’d recommend going to a dealer that has this set up to anyone. It’s surprising how different the many brands of speakers sound and it is easy to select the best by scrolling through them.

THere are several speakers that might fit into your budget. I do recommend that you get Powered speakers just to simplify things. Flat scren monitors (Apple Cinema Displays, LCD and Plasma) usually do not require sheilded monitors. But you will have to keep your cell phone away if you go with unsheilded monitors. If you ar eloking to do audio for HD the gold standard is 5.1 SUrround Sound and for that you will need a lot more than $500. So fo now stay with stereo only. Be sure to save enough money for a Sub (also called an LFE for Low frequency Effects). Otherwise you’ll only be hearing about half the mix. Here are my pics for audio monitors in your proce range. You’ll have to agressively shop in order to stay on budget adn I would visit Ebay frequently:

    Fostex PMO.5
    Alesis M1
    M Audio BX8a

And if you want to go insane listen to a pair of Kinoshita monitors – only about $50K a pair.

I have the MAudio speakers and really like them. I’ve had both Alesis and KRKs in the past but the MAudios sound more accurate in my suite. I also have a 10 inch powered subwoofer paired with them but that would put you a little over your budget.

    Mackie 824s.
    Can’t go wrong.
Sound like Genelec at half the price.
Everybody uses um, from mixing houses to broadcasters.
The entire plant, every studio at Sirius is all Mackie 824s.
More than your budget, they will cost you about $550 per.
I’ve auditioned audio monitors for years and worked with
record engineers who loved their Genelec monitors,
and many of them have Mackie 824s in their home studios.
