In the snow, uphill both ways, blah blah blah…is this where I get to tell my story about strapping on a timecode generator the size of a brick to my camera, plugging it into audio channel 2 and hoping it wouldn’t bleed onto channel one, just so we could cut with some hope of a repeatable matchframe edit? Now back to work you old geezers…of which I am becoming one myself…

I have experience with both AJA and Blackmagic products, but only with AJA on the HD side. I have owned a Decklink SP card, an HD Link, and an Intensity HDMI card. I have had problems with Decklink drivers for the SP, with intermittent display issues with the Intensity (could be an HDMI handshake problem, but a problem nonetheless), and I returned the HD Link after discovering that the unit did not do a good job of displaying SD video, only HD. Not that SD should look great on an HD LCD monitor, but it looked really bad. And the marketing on Blackmagic’s website made it sound like a solution for both, but it was not.
I have never been disappointed with an AJA product. I can always get someone on the phone if I have an issue. When I did have a component fail in my IO, a replacement was shipped next day air so I had almost no downtime.
Lots of people use Blackmagic products and seem to like them. They may work just great for you. They have not for me. At the least I would recommend that you get information on their products firsthand from someone who uses them daily in the same situation as yours, rather than just reading their website.

You’re right that I have a pretty cynical view of Apple’s approach to “upgrading” FCP. Not about the price – I’m sure I’m getting what I’m paying for and more – but about key professional features like a really solid Media Manager that is a very important, still not-quite-there implementation. It’s not just about little pet features I’d like, it’s about big stuff too. But thanks for having a more positive outlook; I’ll try to let it rub off on me.

No doubt, there are more important things that need to be fixed. It’s not a feature that would sell new licenses of FCP, and so it’s probably not a big priority. I would like to hear from anyone who has made a feature request for FCP and actually had it implemented. And I don’t mean a request like “We’d really like better color correction” where Apple just buys another company and adds some sort of “Send To” feature in FCP.

I already know about the right-click. You have to right click once to set the duration, then right-click again to set the position of the dissolve relative to the cut. It’s not as quick or efficient as using the keyboard in a dialog where you can set both whenever you create a dissolve, just by hitting tab and quickly entering a number.
I know, it’s not an Avid. But this is a good idea that’s been requested before.

Would be nice if FCP had the option of a dialog that would popup whenever the user hits command-T or option-command-T (for audio) that would allow the user to set the duration and alignment of the dissolve. Maybe using the arrows left, middle and right to indicate where the dissolve should sit relative to the cut.
Now where’s that link to the FCP feedback form when I need it…

OK, so now there are two of us on this forum named Joe Murray. I guess I’m going to have to create a more complete signature. Anyway, welcome to the forum…unless this is some really lame form of identity theft…

FCP is supposed to be able to do a Cmode, it just doesn’t work. When you export the EDL, select Source sort mode and then open the resulting file in Microsoft Word and select and drag each edit line to the proper order, sorted according to the 1. SOURCE REEL and 2. SOURCE inpoint, not the record inpoint. Once each line is in the right place, save and/or print and provide to the transfer facility. Properly sorted Cmode lists can really speed up a telecine session, but unfortunately Final Cut doesn’t do them correctly.

September 28, 2007 at 12:54 am in reply to: Qmaster and Compressor Network Rendering QestionWith FCS2, I’ve pretty much given up on Compressor let alone Qmaster. Just goes haywire for no reason after working for a week or two, and deleting prefs, even complete reinstalls doesn’t help. Sometimes completely crashes FCP, sometimes does nothing when I hit Submit, even the app itself won’t start up separately from FCP. Grrrr.
