    Hi Lee-Anne,

Is there a chance that the drive isn’t formatted for Mac? Open Disk Utility and check how the drive has been initialized. If it is formatted for mac you may want to check if there is the 2 gb file limitation is checked in the fcp preferences and also make sure the permissions of the capture drive are kosher. While USB isn’t recommended I do capture with it. I have a bunch of drives that are esata/usb2 and capture on machines that don’t have an an esata port to edit on machines that do. While the throughput of the usb is 20-30 MB/sec (compared to 60-70 MB/sec for esata) its still more than adequate to capture dv or hdv.

    Hi Joe,

Dropouts (at least for me) show themselves in long takes as breaks in the footage. Also, do you have the “Create new clip on Start/Stop” box checked?

Can only hope in my dreams that the 17″ will have four cores…

I use this to keep track of the media on 40+ drives:

It allows you to search for contents when they are offline. Couldn’t live without it.

“BTW, no one whose really appreciates the performance benefits of SATA would even think about using a single drive for editing. So, just because “most users have them set up” that way, that only means that most people don’t really get it. That’s not unusual.”

A little condescending, don’t you think? COW just lost a pair of eyeballs…

8x’s as fast? Maybe by spec, but not in my tests with a single drive, which is the way most users have them set up. These are results from a new 320gb 2.5″ in an enclosure with fw and esata:

September 12, 2008 at 8:54 pm in reply to: hdv 24p issues capturing from Canon HV20

    Hi Monica,

Capturing with the HV-20 shouldn’t cause any problems for footage shot on an HV-20 or an XH-G1. Its only after you get the footage in the computer that an extra step is necessary. You need to follow these instructions for the HV-20 footage only:

    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT2410

Those instructions only apply if the the HV-20 was shot at 24p. If they were set at 30p or 60i that step isn’t necessary.

    Hi Mike,

Other suggestions may be using Motion and enabling Optical Flow or applying filters like Twixtor, but I’ve noticed an improvement by using some motion blur right in the clip’s motion settings tab.

September 8, 2008 at 8:55 pm in reply to: out of memory error NO Sequences will open HELP

    Hi Ann,

Does the FCP screen the shows the progress of the application opening stop at a certain point? I’ve had sudden incompatibilities with certain filters that can cause the problem you’re describing. If you notice the screen stops and crashes while loading a particular filter take that filter out and try again. Also, you might try trashing all your renders. There might be a corrupt file that is causing the crash. Lastly, try reinstalling FCP. As a last resort you can dump your media and project file to an external drive and open it on another Mac. It will then just be a matter of reconnecting the resources to the project file.

  • Hi Earl,

Artbeats Film Clutter 1 and 2 is an option, though its pricey. Place the Artbeats clip on the track above where you want the effect and change it’s composite mode to screen.

The MovieFX transition from this group also comes in handy:
