[Shane Ross] “Mavericks OS. That OS won’t support FCP 7”
Has this been proven beyond a doubt?

Thanks for taking the time to write this Lawrence. I’m looking forward to the day I have the confidence to start a project on X.

Hi Rafael,
“FC or MPGStreamclip I don’t think should makes much difference.”
You’d think so, but MPEG Streamclip must be doing something differently. Its measurably faster.

Hey,
Both cores are running at 80-85% when MPEG Streamclip is encoding.

Hi Marcus,
I did some very unscientific tests which compared the Canon Plugin with MPEG Streamclip. For what I’m doing I need to transcode directly from the SDHC card to a laptop in the field. For this test I used a card reader in the ExpressCard slot. Camera is the Canon T2i.
50 clips totaling 8 minutes and 12 seconds
Transcode footage from SDHC to ProRes (LT)
MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.5 GHz
Patriot Class 6 16gb SDHCEOS E1 Plugin – 19:34
MPEG Streamclip – 14:23I’d done a similar test with Compressor and MPEG Streamclip was faster by a similar margin. From what I’d read I’d hoped the Canon plug in would be closer to MPEG Streamclip.
(When I’m editing in the field efficiency and speed are important so transcoding directly from the card works best. Because of that I also tested if there was any benefit to having a Class 10 card rather than a Class 6 card. No difference. The transfer rate is not a determining factor. Its all the CPU, so obviously I’m very much looking forward to an i5/i7 MacBook Pro announcement.)

There is a way to do an easy hack to make the plugin work with the T2i/550D:

Hi Naor,
This abandoned application will capture the tapes regardless of errors or tape damage:
From the included READ ME file:
Big Mug Software, the company behind Capture Magic, has ceased to exist and no longer sells, distributes nor supports any of its software. By definition this effectively puts it into the category of abandonware. In deference to its creators it is a very useful and intuitive application which has continued to work as expected through many OS updates. It was offered with a 15 day fully-functional trial which can be repeated indefinitely by deleting the preference file, located here:
/Library/Preferences/com.Big Mug Software.Capture Magic HD.plist
The most useful features of Capture Magic are a result of the fact that it works outside of QuickTime. This makes it possible to capture footage from tapes that would normally cause all of Apple’s editing software (iMovie, Final Cut Express, Final Cut Pro) to halt captures because of timecode errors or tape damage. The downside is that the resulting files created by Capture Magic will often have audio that is out-of-synch with the video. This can easily be corrected by fixing the offset on the editing application’s timeline.

Maybe try this method for better results?
Haven’t tried yet myself…
