I’m desperate. After slaving for over a week to get this show ready for a screening, I have the director coming in tomorrow and, quite suddenly, the project will open, but NONE of the sequences will open. I get ‘OUT OF MEMORY’ errors when I try to open any sequence. Attempting to open clips causes the clip window to DISAPPEAR.

I assumed my (82mb) project was corrupt, and went to an old project. Same problem. I tried duplicating my project, shutting down and rebooting, deleting any potentially problematical media etc, etc. At this point, it looks like I may have not only lost a week of work but the entire past month!

PLEASe give me some info about how to restore my sequences! I can’t copy and paste because i can’t open them at all.

I’m running FCP 5.0.1 on an early G5, media is on an external Iomega drive with oodles of space still available. OS Leopard. Thank you so much for your help.

    Trash preferences.

    Fix permissions using Apple Utility.

Run Disk Warrior (the version that works with with Leopard).

Thank you. Yes, I’ve run the utilities, trashed preferences and re-booted. NOW the application refuses to open. In the past, trashing preferences fixed this problem, but now it does not seem to help.

Do I have to reload my application? Will that even help? I’ve had to cancel an editing session and I’m concerned that our work is lost.

    Hi Ann,

Does the FCP screen the shows the progress of the application opening stop at a certain point? I’ve had sudden incompatibilities with certain filters that can cause the problem you’re describing. If you notice the screen stops and crashes while loading a particular filter take that filter out and try again. Also, you might try trashing all your renders. There might be a corrupt file that is causing the crash. Lastly, try reinstalling FCP. As a last resort you can dump your media and project file to an external drive and open it on another Mac. It will then just be a matter of reconnecting the resources to the project file.

It didn’t seem to fail on any particular item, but then it runs them by so quickly I can’t read them. The last couple of times, though, it has asked me to register FCP and crashed after I said ‘later’. I’ve had this software for so long, I figured there is some glitch that keeps asking me to register (it has my daughters name in the registration tool box, too, how strange!).

Anyway, I went looking for the software registration booklet and could not find it. I wish I had tried to trash recent renders! of course, it started failing when I was a doing a number of complex motion effects, so that was probably it. However, I was so frustrated and, quite frankly, freaked out at having to delay an edit session and lose all my work that I just bit the bullet and upgraded to FCP Studio 2.

Its installing now. Hopefully this will fix things.

Thanks for the info, though. If I still have problems, I’ll have to start tossing renders. This is an eighty minute graphics and psd project with extensive renders so that would be a huge drag.
