Yes, you need to drag a selection of the text, then throw the clips on it.

If you take that AAF into PT and add all the original source files (BWAVs) into the same session, PT can expand each region with all the source tracks.
Unfortunately, there’s no easy way to do it in MC. Longstanding feature request.

I don’t think that will work.
If the footage has not been transferred with pillarboxing (black bars left and right), then it has been cropped to 16×9 (1.178:1). If you crop the sides now as well, you end up with a zoomed-in version of the original 1.66:1 Aspect Ratio.

If you want to know where 1.66:1 lives, go to Belle-Buit.com and download their HD test chart. It has marker lines for 1.66-within-HD.

You can subsequence from the timeline. After that, just select the subsequences in the bin and hit Bin-AutoSync. This only works if the subsequences have no edits inside them.

One more thing: as the AR for Super 16mm is already 1.66:1, it would normally either have been transferred to 4×3 video with a small letterbox, or to 16×9 SD or HD, eseentially changing the AR to 1.78:1. In either case, you should not need to mask anything.

How was the image transferred? To SD or HD? If SD, was it transferred as anamorphic 16×9?

Your assumption that a 1.66:1 film needs a 16×9 mask is incorrect, as 16×9 equals 1.78:1 not 1.66:1. In the effects palette, under Film, you should find a 1.66:1 mask. This mask only works correctly in 4×3 SD projects, though.

No need for Uncompressed, you can pick one of the Meridien compression flavors. All of them live in that same Avid codec package, though.

Use DNxHD. It’s Avids HD codec. Freely available as a QT codec on https://www.avid.com/codec. Much like ProRes (actually, the other way around), but available for both PC and Mac.

I think you should contact Avid directly. I heard they have shown an upcoming version of MC 5.5 that has a lot of new 3D-features. The software version has not yet been released, but I heard some folks could get it if they needed it now.

  • You are looking for the AutoSync command (Bin->AutoSync). If you are on v5, you can keep the existing tracks of the picture clips, and have the sound added. There are options for that in the AutoSync dialogue box.
