New to AVID, which software package is ideal
Hi all. I am switching from FCP to Avid for a new job and it will require me to edit in 2k stereo3D (2048×857, 2.39 aspect ratio). It’s an animation film and I will receive Tiff/jpg image sequences for the shots. We have a highend windows 7 machine with fast sata drives and 16 gig ram.
I used to work on AVID when I started out but I lost touch with it for the past 5-6 years and I am confused about what avid software we should buy? MC 5.5 seems to only support up to HD resolution. Is DS the right choice? I would not really do anything but editing on it, no compositing and such.

I think you should contact Avid directly. I heard they have shown an upcoming version of MC 5.5 that has a lot of new 3D-features. The software version has not yet been released, but I heard some folks could get it if they needed it now.

While the ‘technology preview’ shown at NAB did have massive leaps in the realm of 3D, it is still limited to an HD frame size….and depending on your workflow, may require a hardware change (Nitris DX).
DS is frame size agnostic, but does clock in at $10,000 for the software only version.
If you intend to work in the Avid Realm, I’d go with the current Metafuze pre-encode and offline/online workflow. It’s battle tested and used frequently. Even if you could get the ‘technology preview’ of the update to MC, it will be brand new and still an offline/online process.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I am surprised MC 5.5 does not support 2k/4k.

I Guess they assume anyone looking to work in 2k/4k would finish on a DS, or another high end finishing system.
