If you can run XP64 or Vista then it IS worth getting the extra RAM if you can afford it/need it? (i.e: if you do more complicated 1080 HD work then you’ll definitely benefit) AE itself will see and use 4GB on a 64-bit OS and Nucleo will use any other RAM you put in to speed up renders/previews.

If you’re on XP32-bit then yeah, no point having more than 3GB.

I’d seriously consider the masks option…if it’s just a static image rotating that sounds like a lot less hassle than a whole re-shoot.

Doesn’t Color Finesse come bundled with AE 7.0? I got it included in the goodies folder of my Production Studio Premium discs..Haven’t used it yet, but I’m pretty sure that uses 3 colours wheels… CF is a separate app that opens from within AE though, so I’m not sure how automated it will be. Might need a bit of fiddling.

Nucleo Pro should blast through AE with 8 processors as long as you have plenty of RAM. If you look at a thread below or search the AE board for ‘Nucleo’..Steve forde I think recommended 2GB per core for maximum performance. So I guess for good performance with 8 cores that’s 16GB RAM, so you’ll need XP64 for or Vista to run that much RAM. I think Nucleo will use upto 32GB.

I’ve heard AE will see 4GB when using XP64..

    Strange that OS 10.4 won’t see 4 aswell..it is a 64bit OS isn’t it?

Also, for reference I’ve been told that if you’re on OSX or WinXP64 you can cram as much to 32GB RAM in and if you have enough processors to make use of it Gridiron Nucleo Pro will eat up ALL 32GB of it! Now that’s fast, long previews if you’ve got the $$$!

January 22, 2007 at 3:55 pm in reply to: Renders slowing to a crawl in AE7

Looks like they’re coming across some more complex effects as the renderer steps through the frames. If your comp starts out very simple it will tell you how long based on the frame it’s rendering…if it hits something more complex it will shoot up, assuming that everything after that frame is the same complexity.

I’d maybe do a really lo-res and small frame sized render and see where the slowing down happens and then you can better gauge what to do.

20-50 mins is VERY long for an AE comp though!

If you have a render famr maybe put it through that? Or render portions of the comp separately?

Also, I believe Aaahron Rabinowitz (sp?!?) did a tutorial to more effectively make progressive footage in AE…search on his page.

Thanks Dave, the job’s done now, but I’ll bear that in mind in future. It menas you have slightly less control if you pre-render an animation, but I guess it’s easy enough to go back and tweak it then re-render again. I imagine it’ll speed it up when it’s in the main comp.

One sloution that worked quite well for rendering the alpha runs was to render a 32-bit targa seq irst, re-import that and then render out a matte run form that….8 seconds to render intead of another 15 mins!

You live and learn!….now where’s my new HP xw8400 and new copy of Particular…..

    Ace on toast.

Now all I have to do is pester the boss to give me my new toy FAST and I’ll by flying like a superhero. Presumably with AE & Nucleo running at full pelt uncompressed SD work is near realtime for simpler projects? That would be wonderful.

    January 18, 2007 at 3:16 pm in reply to: Hyper-threading & Nucleo?

    Hi Steve,

So currently there is no point in me opting for Nucleo (I only have a single-core proc and anything better would need new motherboard, etc.)…however, THEORETICALLY, if I was running XP Pro 32-bit with a dual proc it would be worth my while getting Nucleo Pro and 4GB RAM, even though XP would only see 2GB and AE would only see the 70% or so I’ve allocated of that 2GB?

That’s quite cool that a plugin within a 32bit app, within a 32bit OS can still see and use 4GB ram!

So, if I were to opt for the new HP xw8400 that’s coming out soon, with 2 x quad Xeon procs, would it max out Nucleo’s power if I put 16GB RAM in there too?…Even though AE is still natively 32-bit?
