  • Hyper-threading & Nucleo?

Posted by Jimmy Brunger on January 17, 2007 at 3:50 pm

I’ve got quite an old single-core Pentium 4 processor (3GHz) with HT. I wondered if anybody knows whether Nucleo would enhance anything via the HT in the chip?

Not exactly sure what Hyper-Threading is/does and I know Nucleo pulls the maximum out of multiple processors, but does it have an effect on a single-core HT chip?

I need a quick fix while I wait for my new machines and renders are taking ages at the mo!

    Thanks,
    Jim.

If I read their system requirements on their website, then I would have to say that it wouldn’t work…..

    Good luck,

Sorry, I really should have read that first! Guess not then, oh well.

I see on those specs though that they recommend 4GB ram? If XP only sees 2GB (3 with the switch) then does that mean that Nucleo will see and use the rest (even though AE can’t?)

Nucleo and Nucleo Pro will recognize more RAM than AE. I really don’t recommend the 3GB switch for stability reasons, and we usually recommend at least 1GB ‘per core’. On XP we’ll use up all 4GB, on Win XP 64 and OS X – we can use up to 32GB of RAM.

This has a dramatic impact on the performance of Nucleo and Nucleo Pro, based on amount of RAM ‘per core’. i.e. if you have 8 processors X 2GB per core = 16GB RAM.

    Hi Steve,

So currently there is no point in me opting for Nucleo (I only have a single-core proc and anything better would need new motherboard, etc.)…however, THEORETICALLY, if I was running XP Pro 32-bit with a dual proc it would be worth my while getting Nucleo Pro and 4GB RAM, even though XP would only see 2GB and AE would only see the 70% or so I’ve allocated of that 2GB?

That’s quite cool that a plugin within a 32bit app, within a 32bit OS can still see and use 4GB ram!

So, if I were to opt for the new HP xw8400 that’s coming out soon, with 2 x quad Xeon procs, would it max out Nucleo’s power if I put 16GB RAM in there too?…Even though AE is still natively 32-bit?

Yes. Just make sure that you are running Win XP 64bit. With this, we’ll use up everything you throw at us even though AE is 32bit. A nice side effect of Win Xp 64bit is also AE itself will see 4GB (great for previews!).

    Ace on toast.

Now all I have to do is pester the boss to give me my new toy FAST and I’ll by flying like a superhero. Presumably with AE & Nucleo running at full pelt uncompressed SD work is near realtime for simpler projects? That would be wonderful.
